  • Always work in a good light. Use a daylight bulb when working at night.

  • Fold the fabric into quarters to find the centre for starting.

  • Use a hoop or frame to keep your fabric taut for easier working.

  • Stitch large areas first.

  • Stitch all along a row in half stitches then return with the top stitch.

  • Finish top stitches in the same direction for a neater finish.

  • Stitch Backstitches last.

  • Use short threads say 12-18" (30-50cm).

  • After every few stitches, release the needle to allow the thread to unwind.

  • When repeatedly changing to the same colours, use several needles.

  • Don't leave the needle in the work when storing.

  • Photocopy charts at a larger size for easier working.

  • Having problems keeping your place on the chart? Consider marking 10x10 squares or colouring your chart as you work.

  • Use a chart holder attached to your frame to reduce eye and neck strain.
